OUTDOOR GUY -
FirefliesThese remarkable insects are capable of spontaneously producing continuous or intermittent light. In most cases, only the larvae and adults are luminescent. Their extraordinary cold light is generated in special organs and is produced by the oxidation of fatty luciferin. Luciferin, described as a diffusible themostable compound, furnishes practically heatless light while undergoing oxidation in the presence of an enzyme called luciferase. The light can vary in color in different insects, is most often white, yellow, orange, greenish-blue, or reddish, and is without ultraviolet. The heat produced is scarcely measurable. There are considerable numbers of insects that produce light. The most numerous, important and best known are the beetles belonging to the coleopterous families Lampyridae and Phengodidae. So, at nightfall, particularly during the warm, humid summer evenings, look for the breathtaking elegance, flashing of individual fireflies or literally thousands participating in synchronized unison.
