Eternal Flame Hike -- Orienteering 05/19/2002

Located in Chestnut Ridge Park in Orchard Park, New York, the Eternal Flame was another in our "Discoveries in Our Back Yard" series.   On May 19th, 2002 the members of Troop 1776 hiked the short distance to the flame.  Unfortunately, the heavy spring rains and falls had doused the flames.  And climbing onto the slippery rocks to try to re-light the flame proved to be very treacherous.  We were able to smell the gas though.  This may be the only occurrence in the world of a natural flame that lies under and behind a waterfall!

After viewing the falls, we made our way up and out -- climbing the wall of the canyon to exit.  All the tree roots made for quite an easy and fast exit.

Next we made our way to learn and do some hands on orienteering. ON a course set up by the Buffalo Orienteering Club, using maps and compass, the Scouts got some good practice navigating from control to control, across creek beds and up and down ravines and through woods and brush.  This was a good exercise and skill that all enjoyed doing for several hours.
